High-Waisted Leggings

High-rise leggings quietly became the default for good reason. A look at what makes them work, and the small details worth looking for.
The low-rise legging has had a brief revival, but most of us have quietly stayed with high-rise. The reason isn't aesthetic preference: it's that a well-cut high-rise simply performs better across the kind of movements Pilates and studio training actually ask for.
What 'high-waisted' really means
Most premium high-rise leggings sit somewhere between 27 and 32cm from the inseam to the top of the waistband. High enough to cover the navel, low enough to stay comfortable while seated or bending forward. Anything above 34cm starts to feel bunchy when you sit.
Why the rise matters for Pilates
Roll-ups, teasers, bridges: every Pilates fundamental articulates the spine. A higher waistband stays in place through every vertebra; a lower band rolls and distracts.
What to look for
- A waistband at least 12cm tall
- Bonded or compression-knit construction (not a stitched elastic band)
- A visible inside seam finish: cleaner seams mean less digging
- Four-way stretch so the rise doesn't slip down when you bend
